Hello! Today I have an exciting diy for you all, it's a polymer clay necklace! Now i'm sure you've seen them all around Instagram and there are many shops selling them, but it's super easy to make your own! You don't have to be crafty and it doesn't cost much, and of course with the supplies you buy you could probably make about 4 necklaces depending on how may beads you have on each!
You will need //
~ Du-kit or Polymer Clay
(I bought Du-kit from my local Warehouse Stationery and they sell 50gm packets for $4.20 here)
~ A toothpick
~ Something to bake your clay in (in my case I used a cake tray)
~ An oven
~ String to put your beads on
~ String to put your beads on
So lets get started! (Sorry these photos aren't of the best quality)
Before you get started you will need to pre-heat your oven to 150℃
Step 1 //
Break off some of your polymer clay
Step 2 //
Shape your polymer clay into a ball. This may be difficult as the clay is very hard. If you have warm hands this shouldn't be too difficult though, and it won't happen instantly so just be a bit patient and work the clay a little before shaping it.
Step 3 //
Repeat the above steps until you have enough beads. I made three beads because I think that three looks the best but you can make more or less, it's totally up to you!
Step 4 //
Once you have your beads shaped, use the toothpick to stick a hole through the centre. This shouldn't be too hard but it is easy to ruin the shape of your bead if you press very hard on the bead. Don't worry though, it takes a lot of practise to get it the first time right. If your bead goes out of shape just take out the toothpick, reshape, and try to stick a hole through it again.
Important //
Make sure the hole you make is big enough to thread your string through - rather make it too big than too small!
Step 5 //
Again, repeat for as many beads as you have
Step 6 //
Place your beads into a cake tin or whatever equipment you have available! Just make sure that it's oven safe. Then bake your clay for 15 - 30 minutes or as advised on the packet of your clay. I baked my beads for 20 minutes at 150℃
Step 7 //
After you have baked your beads, let them cool down in the cake tin or whatever you baked them in. When they are cold (it will not take them long to cool down), You can take them out and get your string.
Step 8 //
Thread your beads through your string like so
After you have baked your beads, let them cool down in the cake tin or whatever you baked them in. When they are cold (it will not take them long to cool down), You can take them out and get your string.
Step 8 //
Thread your beads through your string like so
Step 9 //
When you have finished threading your beads, you can tie a knot in your string. This necklace is perfect for a small gift and even though its minimalistic and simple it really adds to any outfit.
Thank you for reading! I'd love to hear what you think so please comment below!
That's a beautiful necklace. It's a little hard to find polymer clay from the nearest craft store, but those polymer clays look really useful for DIYs. :) Is it safe to bake it in a kitchen oven, though? They wouldn't contaminate the oven and it can still be used with food right? :) Or should another oven be bought specially for arts and crafts? Haha I'm not much of a DIY person but I'm keen to learn. :)

Thank you Dian! Yes it is a little bit tricky, but im sure you could find them somewhere online. I actually just stumbled across them at my stationery store with no intention to create a necklace! Quite coincidental haha. Yes i've read online about it and it's perfectly fine to use it in a normal kitchen oven. It doesn't create a smell or anything and as long as you wash the tray which you bake it on its perfectly fine to cook food on afterwards. Have a lovely day! xxx michelle
